OUR FOREST SCHOOL

At Moseley Montessori Nursery Forest school, we cannot enthuse enough about the benefits of taking our children outdoors; learning how best to take risks, cooperating together, negotiating and compromising with each other whilst taking responsibility and having memorable adventures.

POSITIVE OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE

Forest School is an educational approach to outdoor play and learning and the philosophy is to encourage and inspire children through positive outdoor experiences.

We are strategically placed close to Moseley private park where we have our very own area for forest schooling.

By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment all our children have opportunities to develop intrinsic motivation, emotional literacy and social skills.

Our Forest School aims and objectives are to develop:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Regulation
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Empathy
  • Good social & communication skills
  • Independence
  • A positive mental attitude,
  • self-esteem and confidence
  • Fine motor & Gross motor skills

The children learn to use their initiative, solve problems, learn about and respect their environment and have enormous fun! We continue to follow the EYFS and the Montessori curriculum but in the beautiful natural surroundings of Moseley Park.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING IN OUR FOREST SCHOOL

  • Playing and exploring, finding out and exploring, using all their senses to understand the natural world and the changes that take place.
  • Playing with what they know by pretending natural objects are things from their experience
  • Willing to have a go, lots of opportunities to risk take and learn how to risk manage.
  • Active learning, self-chosen activities promote true involvement, focus and concentration.
  • Keep trying to promote resilience, falling over, getting muddy, re-building the stick house blown down by the wind and many more.
  • Enjoying achieving what they set out to do. There is no right or wrong way to play with the open-ended resources.
  • Creating and critical thinking, having their own ideas. Children will develop their own games and play and be involved in planning their own activities.
  • Making links between what is known to them and what they discover, e.g. water is liquid, what is happening to the snow when we hold it in our hand, testing their own ideas by experimenting, can I fix a broken stick?
  • Problem solving opportunities for real life problems. How to stop the stream flowing in this direction? How to stop the rain getting into our den.

“There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees, and all the life to be found around them, in a real forest. Something emanates from those trees which speaks to the soul, something no book, no museum is capable of giving”.
